The Queen of The Coast® Brand Tuna Salads combine gourmet tastes and textures with pop-top convenience to provide you a healthy, complete lunch or snack that includes about 18% of daily suggested protein, omega (3) fatty acids, essential vitamins and your choice of organic vegetables in natural sauces per serving, and the lowest mercury content of all Tuna. History

1853

Sebastian Ramirez establishes S. Ramirez, a factory, located in Vila Real de Santo António, with two activities: the production of jute and the preparation of tuna in brine.

1865

Ramirez begins to pack their canned tuna, mackerel and sardines in metal cans, and created one of the first in the world canneries.

1890

In S. Ramirez proceeds to make use of an autoclave, which allows makes it possible to obtain the desired temperature very quickly, reducing the sterilization time and avoiding the change of cans sterilized during cooling.

1910

Manuel Garcia Ramirez, who succeeds his father in the conduct of business, extends the activity to capture sardines, acquiring the Our Lady of the Incarnation, the first Portuguese Sardinheiro steam galleon. Ramirez unfolds, with new units in Olhão and Albufeira.

1917

Manuel Garcia Ramirez successfully consolidates a process of internationalization resulting from the conquest of markets through its own brands, such as the Cocagne, leader of the Belgian market, which had entered 11 years ago.

1926

Emilio Ramirez, the successor of Manuel Ramirez in driving the company transfers its production of Albufeira unit for Matosinhos, maintaining proximity to the sea and catch, that has always guided the company’s strategy.

1945

Emilio Ramirez asks for the licensing of a unit built from scratch in Leca da Palmeira, which locates the center of the Ramirez operations and its export activity, greatly facilitated by the proximity of the port of Leixões as part of the company’s strategy.

1958

Emilio Ramirez acquires a new plant in Peniche, preparing for the future, which would impose, years later, for lack of raw material in the Algarve, a concentration of more activity in the North.

1965

Manuel Guerreiro Ramirez, succeeds his father Emilio Ramirez and launches the pillars of modernity through innovative concepts of conservation and packaging, quality control, product innovation and opening new distribution channels, as well as of modern marketing management and communication.

1970

Ramirez launches a new packaging of canned fish with easy opening. An innovation that won the whole sector worldwide.

1977

Respect for specifications health and hygiene led Manuel Guerreiro Ramirez to create our own laboratories for quality control. The bet paid off and their reliability gives you the world …

1999

The result of a thorough implementation work of improving production and quality control processes, Ramirez is awarded the Higher Level Certificate of Conformity by EFSIS.

2003

Ramirez celebrates 150 years and becomes the oldest canned seafood factory in the world, with over 15 brands in virtually every continent and optimally positioned because of our rich heritage and deep industry knowledge, to cope with future challenges andserve our customers better.

2007

Ramirez starts a bet in the segment of healthy eating, putting on the market the Tuna Diet & Fitness, one natural tuna accompanied by a diet plan and exercise for a healthy life.

2009

Ramirez creates the CENUTRA – Ramirez Nutrition Center, with the support of the Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences, University of Porto.

2010

Ramirez becomes co-founder of Hyper Cluster Portuguese Sea, a project to revitalize the activities related to the maritime economy.

2010

Ramirez was awarded the blue eco-label of the Marine Stewardship Council MSC, which gives the purse seine fishery of the Portuguese sardine a certificate of environmental sustainability, and became the industry’s first company in Portugal to be certified by Moody’s.
